Playboy Interview: Mike Wallace
Editor’s Note: Hailed as the pioneer of magazine-style television journalism, Mike Wallace was as revered and respected as they come. His 40 year career as the host http://bagsoutletsonlines.com/ of “60 Minutes” saw him Coach factory outlet online handle the most controversial interviews, from Malcolm X to Roger Clemens and tackle the most daunting and dividing issues of the late American Century. On Sunday Morning, CBS announced that the famed newsman had died at 93. The following is the 1996 Playboy interview with the man who revolutionized the word."Sometimes I have a foul mouth, but people in the office respect that. They say, 'He may be a pain, but that's Mike.' Anyway, I'm such an old bugger by now that they figure, What the hell. Let him do whatever he does.""Connie Chung did the right thing. Gingrich's mother is hardly stupid. She was used to scrutiny. There were cameras in the room. Were she a little old lady who didn't know her way around, it would have been different.""It triggered a clinical depression. When you pick up the paper every morning and read that you are a thief, a liar, a murderer, it makes you feel lower than a snake's belly. Every insecurity I ever had took over."Mike Wallace scoops coach factory outlet a handful of water from a washbasin at his vacation home on Martha's Vineyard. Running it through his silver-streaked hair, he says, "There, you see? Doesn't it look black?""Darker," admits his visitor. The water trick is Wallace's little concession to a senior citizen's vanity. At 78, the master interrogator of American television has only recently begun to turn gray. He swears on the heads of his four wives, three children and ten grandchildren that he has never dyed his hair, something some friends find hard to believe. Then again, there's much about Wallace that taxes the imagination: that he's been on television for nearly half a century; that he's appeared on60 Minutessince the day it started in 1968; that he is still considered by some to be America's toughest interviewer, as he zigzags the globe, grilling politicians and entertainers, saints and sinners, kings and con men. Over the years, Wallace has parried with the likes of Malcolm X, Luciano Pavarotti, Louis Farrakhan, Barbra Streisand, Yasir Arafat, Henry Kissinger, Vladimir Horowitz, Martina Navratilova, the Ayatollah Khomeini and Oprah Winfrey. He has also gone head-to-head with various heads of state, including the Shah of Iran, King Hussein, Deng Xiaoping, Anwar Sadat and presidents Reagan and Carter and their wives.Wallace doesn't chase only the well known. He's as comfortable busting a shady Texas businessman as he is calling Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic a "war criminal" to his face. He practically invented hard-hitting investigative TV journalism, thanks to his willingness to put any question to anyone at any time. The hidden camera and so-called ambush interview were staples of Wallace's early60 Minutessegments."Most interviewers have an embarrassment ceiling," said the late CBS News executive Bill Leonard. "But Mike is totally unafraid." Today, with more than a year left on his CBS contract, Wallace sees no reason to slow the frantic pace of helping to create, week after week, the network's top-rated broadcast and the world's most popular public affairs show (60 Minutesranks in the top ten).Of late, however, the road has gotten bumpy for Wallace. In recent years he has been upbraided, embarrassed or both for staging a hidden-camera interview in his own office (the taped encounter was with a camera-shy journalist who was actually trying to help him), for semipublic dustups with colleagues and for an intemperate tirade against former White House press secretary Marlin Fitzwater, who had written unflattering remarks about him in his autobiography. But, most famously, Wallace took the fall for CBS' decision in late 1995 not to air his exclusive interview with Jeffrey Wigand, the former tobacco company vice president who blew the whistle on his ex-bosses. The embarrassment to Wallace and60 Minuteswas compounded when theNew York Daily NewsandThe Wall Street Journalran detailed stories about Wallace's unused interview. Playing catch-up,60 Minutesfinally ran the piece—three months later. In the aftermath of the incident there was speculation that the show had lost its edge. The network's previous loss of NFL football plus eight key affiliates to Rupert Murdoch's Fox Television Network convinced some critics—and competitors—that the show's quarter-century lock on the Sunday night prime-time audience was at last weakening.Last spring, NBC shoved its successfulDateline NBCmagazine show into Sunday's seven P.M. slot. With Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips anchoring, the peacock network hoped to peel off the younger end of Wallace's audience. Don Hewitt, the executive producer of60 Minutesand the show's iron hand, counterpunched by bringing in outside correspondents and fresh summertime material, instead of airing the usual reruns. The changes paid off. By the time the fall season approached, Hewitt's indefatigable cash cow (Wallace says the show earns $50 million a year for CBS) was once again holding firm in the top-ten position it has occupied for 18 years.Mike Wallace was born Myron Leon Wallace on May 9, 1918, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents in the Boston suburb of Brookline, Massachusetts. The neighborhood was, as Wallace calls it, an "O'Connor and Goldberg town," an Irish-Jewish enclave of the newly arrived and upwardly mobile. The Wallaces' neighbors down the street were Joe and Rose Kennedy, whose second son, John Fitzgerald, was born one year before Wallace. Another neighbor, Harry Dickson, who later became conductor of the Boston Pops and the father-in-law of future governor Michael Dukakis, was Wallace's violin teacher.A decent fiddler and a fair tennis player (he was concertmaster of the Brookline High School symphony and captain of its tennis team), Wallace was nonetheless drawn to a career in broadcasting. Severe acne made him seek the darkened solitude of the radio studio, where he could be heard but not seen. It didn't take long for Wallace to discover that his voice was more of a gift than his forehand. Graduating in 1939 from the University of Michigan, he landed his first radio job in Grand Rapids, then Detroit, where he was used as an all-purpose announcer to read the news, bring onThe Green Hornetand occasionally summon upThe Lone Ranger. He married Norma "Kappy" coach factory outlet online Kaphan when he was 22, and his first son, Peter, was born in 1942, shortly before Wallace joined the Navy and shipped out for the Pacific. After the war, Wallace divorced, but not before having a second son, Chris (now a chief correspondent on ABC'sPrime Time Liveand substitute host onNightline). Knocking around the burgeoning Chicago broadcasting scene, Wallace met and interviewed—then courted and married—a stage star named Buff Cobb, with whom he launched a husband-and-wife TV interview show,Mike and Buff. Lured to New York, the couple was broadcast nationally on CBS, but the marriage began to crumble. After a short stint on Broadway—Wallace played an art dealer in a comedy calledReclining Figure—he finally found the niche that would forever define his broadcast persona. Ensconced on an all-black set—suited more to a police interrogation than to an interview program—Wallace waved a fuming cigarette at his guests and soon became TV's first tough-as-nails cross-examiner. The show,Night Beat, earned its host the reputation as a guy who would ask any question—no matter how insulting. Among his earliest guests was a budding young magazine publisher named Hugh Hefner. On that segment, Wallace called Hefner's star vehicle, Playboy, a "high-class dirty book," adding that its presentation of sex was "sniggering," "lascivious" and "certainly not a healthy approach to sex—you wouldn't suggest that?" (This time Wallace got as good as he gave. "I would not only suggest that," Hefner responded, smiling, "I would say it rather strongly: We consider it a pretty healthy attitude.")Wallace also took on freelance broadcast assignments and made a handsome living. But when his son Peter was killed in a 1962 hiking accident in Greece, the grief-stricken father decided to change his life. Despite a significant decrease in income, Wallace stopped doing commercials and entertainment work and implored CBS to give him a news job. By 1968 he was a senior correspondent for the network, covering the resurrected presidential ambitions of Richard Nixon, who tried—unsuccessfully—to hire Wallace as his press secretary.Wallace's reputation as a pit-bull interviewer endured, and shortly after the 1968 election he was recruited for a new "magazine show" called60 Minutes. The show's rambunctious executive producer, Don Hewitt, needed a tough guy to play against the easy going charm of the show's other correspondent, Harry Reasoner. The show debuted on September 24, 1968. More than 1300 broadcasts later, it's still a hit.We sent Peter Ross Range, a veteran of seven Playboy Interviews," to catch up with Wallace, first in New York, then at Wallace's vacation home on Martha's Vineyard. Wallace is no stranger to the "Playboy Interview," having previously been both a subject (the60 Minutesteam, March 1985) and an interviewer (Jimmy Hoffa, November 1963). Here is Range's report:"When Mike Wallace first came down the hall toward me in his apartment on New York's coach factory online Upper East Side, I was struck by his slimness—quite different from the sometimes frumpy figure he cuts on TV. It also became apparent why he's still ticking so loudly after all these years: He's a disciplined eater who plays tennis every day in the summer, weekly in the winter. His restless energy makes him a pacer in the office as well as on the court. He credits his healthful diet to his third wife, Lorraine, who 'fed me nuts and raisins for 28 years.'"While Wallace lives and works in New York, his heart—and future resting place—is on Martha's Vineyard, the island he's been visiting since he was a boy. There he spends languid summer days with his best buddies: humorist Art Buchwald, writer William Styron, theater director Robert Brustein, academic Sheldon Hackney. Together this East Coast rat pack have bought plots for themselves and their wives in a beautiful, tiny cemetery just 200 yards down the road from Wallace's sprawling summerhouse overlooking Vineyard Haven harbor."Naturally, I was nervous about interviewing the ultimate interviewer. Suppose he turned the tables? Suppose he barked at me? But the true impact of facing Wallace dawned on me one day at a New York tennis club, when, between games, one of his friends asked me what it was like to interview the master. For a second I was at a loss to answer—but then found myself saying, 'It's easy.' That's when I realized that Wallace, whose personal manner is much gentler than the one seen on TV (except when he's arguing a line call in tennis), had put me so much at ease that I'd forgotten to be daunted by him. "We did, however, begin our conversation with a discussion of his notoriously hard-hitting style." 12345678Next

Matthew Cox's Real Estate Scams and Fraud .com
Matthew Cox always wanted to make his father proud, but he didn't think it would land him on coach factory online the top of the Secret Service's most wanted list. His scam was real estate fraud, and he was the best. For five years during the peak of the housing boom, he crisscrossed the southern United States, hustling home owners and banks for as much as $26 million—with the help of a revolving cast of female accomplices.Weaned on heist films, he went to cinematic lengths to succeed, becoming a master forger, assuming dozens of identities and spending tens of thousands of dollars on plastic surgery to alter his appearance. It's one of the craziest crime sprees in recent memory. It also offers new insight into the mortgage crisis from which we're still reeling. Cox surfed the tidal wave of greed in the housing industry right up until it crashed, helping lead America into http://coachfactoryhandbagoutlet2u.webs.com/ one of its worst recessions ever. He epitomized just how reckless lending practices were over the past decade. For everything we hear about the bad loans that Wall Streeters peddled, this one horny young con artist in Florida had them beat. "I'm going on 20 years as a federal public defender," said his attorney Mildred Dunn, "and I don't know that I've ever seen anyone quite as imaginative as him."Despite Cox's ingenuity, this globe-trotting fugitive failed to take one thing into account: that he would end up in prison. That's where I found him one sweltering afternoon last summer, sitting in a bare concrete courtyard at the federal correctional institution in Coleman, Florida. A short, clean-cut 43-year-old with spiky brown hair, green eyes and a graying soul patch, Cox stood out from the tattooed prisoners milling nearby. "It's depressing," he told me as he glanced furtively around. "This is not a good environment."For the next 21 years, however, it's his, and I had come to get the first full account of his inside herve leger dresses story. How did a dyslexic kid from Florida become one of the greatest swindlers of our time?If you ask Cox, he'll give you two answers. Told by his father that he'd never amount to anything, he had an insatiable need to prove himself. And as he discovered, he had just the power he needed to do so: an ability to look at a system and artfully exploit its flaws. As he told me, "I see something, and I just see the holes in it."?Cox first saw holes every time he picked up a book. Dyslexic, he hated the fact that he couldn't read like other kids. To make matters worse, he was put in a special program where some of his classmates had Down syndrome, which compounded his insecurities. A teacher told him he'd never graduate from high school. "That almost made him more determined," recalled his mother, Margaret.Ashamed of his condition, Cox became an expert actor. To avoid the embarrassment of not being able to read a menu quickly, he realized he could just order chicken all the time and go unnoticed. It was a key insight for the future con artist. "You come up with ways around things," he recalled. "It's diversion." Cox's dad, an insurance agency manager and alcoholic, was less than sympathetic. "You grow up being called a loser and ‘you stupid nothing,'?" Cox told me with a grimace. "The only way to fix all your problems is with money."Despite his troubles, Cox grew to be charming and ambitious, a people pleaser with a taste for fast cars, sexy women and fine art. To compensate for his diminutive frame, he began herve leger dresses obsessively working out. He also taught himself to paint. Although he graduated summa cum laude from the fine arts program at the University of South Florida, his dad told him the best he'd do was to become a caricaturist at Disney World.Determined to prove his father wrong, Cox set out to look for a future. His girlfriend, who worked in the mortgage industry, suggested he take a job as a broker. Despite the recent dot-com crash on Wall Street, coach factory outlet a housing bubble was beginning to grow—particularly in Florida, where aging boomers were eager to retire. Cox saw an opportunity to join the 28,000 other people in the state with mortgage-broker licenses. He got a job and a cubicle in a mortgage-brokerage office.Though a natural salesman, he couldn't earn enough to maintain his increasingly expensive lifestyle. With credit card bills going unpaid, he fell into debt, warding off repo men and foreclosure—and facing the crushing reality that he'd have to move in with his parents. Then his fortune changed. Cox had a sizable deal that wasn't closing. His client had been late on her rent. Now she wanted to buy a place, but banks were wary. His boss offered a solution: Take a bottle of Wite-Out and doctor the application so it looked as though the rent payments had been made on time. Cox had never done anything criminal before, but he felt desperate enough to dab Wite-Out on the page. "That decision changed the course of my entire life," he later recalled. When the tweaked application closed without a problem, Cox became a con artist—in the truest sense of the word. With his steady hand and eagle eye, he discovered his fine-art training made him an expert forger. He began to meticulously craft bogus documents he needed to close a loan: W-2 statements, pay stubs and canceled checks. He even figured out how to make his own notary stamp. Before long Cox left his job and opened his own company to cash in on his skills. He had reason to be inspired. By 2002 America's real estate market was, as The Washington Post put it, "roaring." To beef up the economy, mortgage rates dropped to their lowest in 30 years, fueling a wave of home purchases and refinancing. Although some had concerns about an overextended bubble, Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan told Congress not to worry, attributing the boom to the "demand of low mortgage rates, immigration and shortages of buildable land."But the boom, as Cox knew, was also sparked by scams like his own. Remarkably, Cox later recalled, his forgeries were "caught all the time" by various underwriters and banks. But, he said, despite people making vague threats to report him to the FBI, no one ever did. Everyone was making money, so why fuss??Cox soon realized there was a way to make even more cash. Instead of doctoring applications of real people to get them loans, why not make up fake identities and use them to take out loans for himself—loans he would never pay back?Using his access to home loan applications, Cox stole Social Security numbers—even from toddlers—and then created false identities to go along with them. He got so brazen that he named some of his fictitious people after colors, inspired by one of his favorite crime movies, Reservoir Dogs. "I thought I was being clever, but it was obnoxious," he recalled. He was also penning his own loosely autobiographical novel, The Associates, about a mortgage-fraud con.But Cox couldn't outrun his scams forever. Eventually one of his counterfeit canceled checks caught up with him, and he pleaded guilty in 2002 to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The plea only emboldened him. The sentence, he marveled, was remarkably light: a $1,000 fine, 42 months of probation and the loss of his mortgage license (which he had never needed to pull off his dirty work anyway). 123Next

Playboy Interview: Politically Incorrect Host Bill Maher
"I don't believe life is necessarily precious, I don't believe everything happens for a reason, and I don't think people necessarily have goodness in them. Life is precious? It can be. It can also be a waste of protoplasm.""I can probably come across as bullying--especially since it's my show and I have home-court advantage. I should watch that. The real bullies are O'Reilly and Hannity, though. They never let you finish a sentence.""Barack Obama is exciting. Everyone says he's a rock star, which is one of the most overused phrases these days; everybody's a rock star. You know what? If you're not getting blown after the event, you're not a rock star." In an age when millions of Americans turn to late-night TV and YouTube videos for satiric commentary on the day's news, Bill Maher is, as he has put it himself, the godfather of political humor. An "acid-tongued comedian" and "one of the establishment's most entertaining critics," according to The New York Times, Maher sends up the nation's movers and shakers on his HBO hit, Real Time With Bill Maher, a freewheeling and funny roundtable discussion of national and global issues. His guests have included George Clooney, Howard Dean, Michael Moore, Robin Williams, Drew Barrymore, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, General Wesley Clark, Gary Hart, Pat Buchanan, Ben Affleck, John Edwards and George Carlin. On the show, which has received multiple Emmy nominations, Maher has continually attacked George W. Bush--calling the president "a catastrophe that walks coach factory like a man" and the "retarded child emperor"--and criticized the war in Iraq. But Maher is no knee-jerk liberal. He is pro-death penalty and pro-Israel, supports a powerful military and has strongly libertarian views on sex and drugs. For Maher there are no sacred cows. This past Halloween he angered the entire continent of Australia by dressing up as TV's Steve Irwin just weeks after a stingray fatally speared the Crocodile Hunter. More recently Maher was embroiled in controversy when he outed Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee at the time, as a homosexual; Mehlman later quit his job. Christian groups also frequently assail Maher for his cracks about religion, which he calls stupid and dangerous.None of these storms compare to the hurricane generated by one of his comments following the 9/11 attacks. The president had called the terrorists cowards, prompting Maher to respond on his late-night ABC talk show, Politically Incorrect, "Lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away--that's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building--say what you want about it, it's not cowardly."Maher was denounced by the White House and vilified by the media. Advertisers such as Sears and FedEx pulled their ads from the show, and it was soon canceled. Many people assumed it marked the end of Maher'scareer, but they were wrong. Six days after the cancellation, he received an award from the Los Angeles Press Club for championing free speech, followed by a Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award. In 2003 he returned to television with his smarter, funnier, hipper and, thanks to HBO, uncensored new show.Besides working in television, Maher, 51, has written a number of books, including When You Ride Alone You Ride With Bin Laden, New Rules and Does Anybody Have a Problem With That? He was also one cheap coach factory backpacks of the first TV stars to have a regular Internet show, on Amazon.com, and his blog appears on The Huffington Post. He is currently producing and directing a documentary about religion. After the 2006 election, as Republicans lost control of the House and Senate, we decided to track Maher down for his second Playboy Interview. Contributing Editor David Sheff, who interviewed the comedian a decade ago, traveled to Los Angeles for the follow-up. Sheff reports, "Maher hasn't mellowed. On the contrary, he is more emphatic and confident--and funnier. The sessions, which took place at an L.A. hotel (Sylvester Stallone was hanging around) and at Maher's Beverly Hills home (yes, there is a stripper's pole in the club room), began at coach factory two P.M., which is early morning for him. He started off sleepily but quickly warmed to the subjects at hand, including the war in Iraq, past and upcoming elections, and the Hollywood trend of starlets eschewing underwear."Playboy: After the Democratic upset in the midterm election and with a year and a half left for the Bush administration, are you feeling more optimistic about the country's direction?Maher: Are you kidding? It's a disaster. Unmitigated. Every day we're killing more American soldiers for an immoral and unwinnable war based on lies. We're killing innocent Iraqis. cheap coach backpacks The environment is disintegrating. It's one debacle after the next. Much of the rest of the world loathes us. We're infinitely less safe than we were before 9/11. Other than that, everything's great.Playboy: President Bush may disagree. He maintains the world is safer now.Maher: The world is not safer. We took Saddam Hussein out, but the idea that he was in league with Osama bin Laden was a direct lie, a bigger lie than the weapons of mass destruction. Being a power-hungry dictator, Hussein would never have given somebody a nuclear weapon, especially someone like Bin Laden, who hated him because he was a secularist. Even three years ago the world wasn't safer because we'd gone into Iraq. Now even Iraq isn't safer. We want to keep Muslim extremists who hate Americans from coming here and hurting us, so what do we do? We go into the heart of the Muslim world and start this cockfight. Muslims around the world do not look at our invasion of Iraq as an attempt to install democracy and freedom. They're far more cynical, and they have reason to be. America has meddled in foreign affairs many times, usually for its own self-interest. We meddled in Iraq in 1963 under Kennedy and put a young assassin named Saddam Hussein on the case of killing its leader. We abandoned the Kurds in 1991. When Bush's father encouraged the Shiites to rise against Hussein, we pulled a Bay of Pigs and didn't show up; they were massacred. In their view we went in for oil and perhaps just to fuck with Muslims. coach factory outlet There will be angry Muslims for generations. To those on the right who say Muslims hated us anyway, yes, a certain number of them did. But I don't see how taking that hate and raising it from a simmer to a boil has helped matters. We were having a picnic and a couple of hornets were stinging us, so we went over and hit the nest with a stick. Exactly how is the world safer?Playboy: What would you have the U.S. do at this point?Maher: Get out of Iraq. Having troops and bases in the heart of the Muslim world is a thorn in the side of the people who live there. Throughout the region, we are building giant bases with Pizza Huts and car dealerships, stuff that goes over really well in that part of the world. Next there will be a Spearmint Rhino gentlemen's club.Playboy: If we pull out, there will likely be increased chaos and slaughter.Maher: The sooner we get out, the sooner it will end. Turkey will come in? Iran will come in? Maybe, maybe not. It's Allah's will. Who knows? Maybe it will shake out in a not so horrible way. The country of Iraq has existed only since 1932. It's seven years younger than Paul Newman. So what if it breaks apart into three countries? It's not worth one more dead American to uphold a line on a map that Winston Churchill drew, probably when he was drunk. We disbanded the Iraqi army, which was not a great idea because now there's a group of Sunnis who know how to use weapons, have no future and have reason to hate us because we put the Shiites in power. We created a massive insurgent guerrilla army. We painted ourselves into a corner, and Bush still doesn't get it. The Iraq that was is gone and will never rise again. It has already partitioned itself into three countries: Kurdistan is completely autonomous in the north, the Shiite southern part is a theocracy mostly allied with Iran, and the middle is a mess. The Sunnis are still trying to hold on. They're never going to put it back together again. When we went in, we were told Iraqis would throw flowers at us. Anyone who was of a mind to throw flowers is either dead or gone. Moderate Iraq doesn't exist anymore.Playboy: Did the 2006 election vindicate your views on Iraq?Maher: It was a breath of fresh air. Democrats may differ from Republicans only in that they are bought off by a slightly less scary group of special interests, but at this point a slightly less scary group looks pretty good.Playboy: What will a Democratic Congress do better?Maher: Put pressure on the administration to end the war. Barbara Boxer said she's going to hold hearings on global warming. With scientists! In America! Wow. Bush's theory is we should teach intelligent design along with creationism--treat stupidity as if it's a competing school of thought. In addition, in medical school, along with what ob-gyns normally learn, we're going to teach that storks bring babies.Playboy: You once said that if we get any stupider about science, soon we won't even be able to make our own crystal meth.Maher: Look at our leader. He doesn't believe in evolution. I'm embarrassed by the cretins who have taken over. Luckily they're on the way out. In the next election, even if the Republicans win the presidency, at least it won't be Bush.Playboy: What Democratic candidate would you support?Maher: Barack Obama is exciting. Everyone coach backpacks says he's a rock star, which is one of the most overused phrases these days; everybody's a rock star. You know what? If you're not getting blown after the event, you're not a rock star. But okay, Obama is a rock star. Fine, if that's what it takes. He seems articulate and serious and thoughtful and electable.Playboy: Some people say he's inexperienced and unprepared to be president.Maher: Bush was woefully unprepared. It obviously doesn't prevent Americans from voting for you. If Obama wants it, he's one of the Democrats' most viable candidates. John Edwards too. In America you can't get elected president unless you can pronounce all four e's in the word shit. Clinton, Carter and Bush could. Edwards can.Playboy: Can you?Maher: She-e-e-e-it.Playboy: You'd be a great candidate.Maher: Yeah, right. I think religion is bad and drugs are good. You want to be my campaign manager?Playboy: Sure. We like a challenge, especially when dealing with your checkered past.Maher: Who has more of a checkered past than Bush? He was a drunk until he was 40. He wouldn't answer the cocaine question, which was a way of saying, "Yeah, I did it, and go fuck yourself." That's one of the few things I admire him for. He basically said, "I was a sinner, and now I'm not." Americans love that. What they don't like is when you get blown in office.Playboy: Speaking of Bill Clinton, you have said he should be allowed to run again.Maher: In a democracy, the people should be able to elect whomever they want. It's not a very clever tribe of Indians that prevents its greatest warriors from taking the field of battle.Playboy: The Constitution would have to be changed for him to do so.Maher: We'll change it so both he and Arnold Schwarzenegger can run. Can you imagine the interest if Clinton ran against Schwarzenegger? The debate could be on pay-per-view.Playboy: Would you support Clinton?Maher: Sure. He has a reputation as a party animal because of the Monica Lewinsky situation, but basically he's a wonk. He can do Monica and run the country. He's a multitasker. If he had been president when Katrina hit, he would have been in New Orleans three days before the storm. He wouldn't have slept. Yes, he would have been getting blown--come on, Slick Willie in the Big Easy? He would have had some excellent étouffée. But he would have been working the whole time. I think the country has learned a lesson: If he can do the job, let the guy be who he is. People don't care about sex. 1234Next

Playboy.com's NFL Week 13 picks plus David Stern and the Spurs
We were going to talk about football today and I was going to impart some serious old-style wisdom on you like why it’s coach backpacks never wise to bet heavily on the Steelers on cold, cloudless, moonless nights in November when Ben Roethlisberger is black-eyed and bloated and the Browns are in town. But instead I find myself slumped back and stupid, reeling in the wake of yet another ugly sighting of a doe-eyed David Stern. He’s been, for the better part of 29 years, like a swamp creature emerging from the muck only every so often to terrorize the small basketball towns that pepper the rural Midwest and we might have hoped that he would spend his lame duck years lying in a dark, quiet corner of the commissioner’s office, skulking around and stirring only on occasion to accept cheap coach backpacks conciliatory praise but we as basketball people have never be considered so lucky by the great powers that be. Instead what we have is David Stern acting rabid, like a damned diseased dog gone mad and determined at whatever cost to bring what’s left of the league back down into the depths from whence it came.Back when we were all still young, still bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, never once did we think that someday Stern’s national television contract would supersede the well-being of a few well-past-their-prime players or the independence of a coach to decide on how best to field his team. But by God have the times have ever changed. Has David Stern ever soured on the idea of sport for sports sake and is now only concerned with making a fast buck at the expense of whatever. He’s taken to panicked bouts screaming and writhing and thrown all his toys from the pram. And it’s only getting weirder; he’s dreaming in Technicolor coach factory online and holding coaches to the kind of high moral standards he’s never had. Who the fuck is David Stern to deem something to be an “unacceptable [basketball] decision”? This from the same silly man who brought us “basketball reasons,” perhaps the least intelligible excuse in the history of sports. The same guy that has publicly castrated multiple NBA owners on a whim. The same guy accused of rigging more than one NBA draft to get better pick in a more marketable city and the same guy that said they could never supplant him as a commissioner because he “knew where the bodies were buried; he buried them himself.”And now he wants to go waltzing through the front door in San Antonio and tell Greg Popovich who he can and can’t sit even after his hand-picked commissioner-in-waiting has spoken to the problem, stating that “the strategic resting of particular players on particular nights is within the discretion of the teams.” Jesus Christ. David Stern has undermined so many people in his 29 coach factory online year reign he can’t even keep them all straight anymore. He’s just throwing anyone within arm’s reach under the bus. He can’t talk about tanking; it’s November (and the Spurs are 13-4). He can’t talk about it being unfair to the fans; he’d be a hypocrite (and the game was a humdinger). He can’t talk about it being spiteful or stupid; the Spurs were coming off back-to-backs and four games in five nights with the division and league-leading Grizzlies on tap for Saturday (if anything, coach factory online it was smart). He can’t sincerely talk about any of those things. The only thing David Stern can legitimately speak to in this instance is how sitting three stars like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker in a nationally televised game makes David Stern and the NBA look stupid in the eyes of their sponsors who only televised the game in the first place for the matchup. But it’s not like it’s costing Stern money; the downward tick in Neilsen ratings for last night’s game would barely register over the course of a season, and no TV contract has ever paid out by viewership points per night. That’s not really how these things work, Mr Stern. So what the fuck are you screaming about you Bass-Aackwards Hillbilly? What kind of example are you trying to make of Greg Popovich and the Spurs? If you want to dip you hands http://beautifulcoachbackpacks2t.webs.com/ into the day-to-day affairs of a team, you had your chance; you owned one and had had no qualms about messing around with it. But the Hornets were the only team you should have been able to butt into and even then we took exception; you shouldn’t be allowed to butt your nose into the affairs of any team. You should stop butting your nose into basketball altogether and go back to whatever wasteland that bore you and take whatever hell-spawn you've left behind along for the ride. I'm done with you David. It's football season and you're fucking it up.This Week's Picks:Chicago (-3.5) over SeattleI’d be more comfortable with this line if I knew Seattle’s corners were serving the suspension they deserved but I’ll settle for the second best run defense against an ice-cold Marshawn Lynch.Tennessee (+6) over HoustonCall it a feeling…Minnesota (+8) over Green BayEight is a lot of points for a team that had nothing but soft matchups for five straight weeks then got thumped by the Giants 38-10. At 6-5 the Vikings are not fucking around; an upset here could have them in the middle of the playoff conversation.New York (-2.5) over WashingtonThis is actually gambling on the seasonal Giants swoon and whether last week’s aberration in the Meadowlands was just that: an aberration from their routine rut or early turn around and we can all go home without calling for the head of Tom Coughlin for a change. Let’s go with the later just for kicks.St. Louis (+7.5) over San FranciscoSan Fran tied the Rams with Alex Smith under center only a few weeks ago. No reason to think St. Louis can’t fall within seven a second time around.Philadelphia (+10) over DallasThese are two mind -boggling bad teams playing in the same division, neither of whom should ever be allowed to lay ten on anybody let alone each other.Arizona (+4.5) over New YorkOne of these teams will win a football game this Sunday.Quick Slants:Carolina (-3) over Kansas City, Cleveland (-2.5) over Oakland, Indianapolis (+5) over Detroit, New England (-7) over Miami, Pittsburgh (+8) over Baltimore, Denver (-7) over Tampa Bay, Cincinnati (-1.5) over San Diego, Jacksonville (+6) over BuffaloLast Week: 6-6-1Overall: 97-60-5Catch up on past PlayBookshere.

Braids & Nude Nails Top Day 4′s Beauty Trends ELLE
Braids & Nude Nails Top Day 4′s Beauty TrendsFebruary 13 4:53 PMby Britt Aboutaleb 0 Comments DVF, left. Zac Posen, right. Photos: Imaxtree Day four of New York Fashion Week featured intricate nude nails, beautiful braids and perhaps a city-wide gel draught. Here, the day's most salient hair and nail trends. Shellacked Shapes Ted Gibson used a veritable half-bottle of his Fix It Gel backstage at Carmen Marc Valvo to create a triangular low bun.  The hair, parted on the side, was as shiny as patent leather.   At Zac Posen, John Freida's Luigi  constructed a Japanese-inspired chignon saturated with gel and accented with shorn pieces of the models' actual hair coated in product; the ends were snipped into sharp ribbon-like points before being artfully stuck back into the updo. John Frieda's Sheer solution gave it a lacquered gleam. Orlando Pita for Phyto sculpted a super shiny low bun at Diane Von coach outlet store Furstenburg. Pita made the models' parts and crowns almost reflective with cheap coach outlet Phytolisse Ultra-Shine Smoothing Serum and Pro Wet Gel. Nude Nails After a couple seasons of hot and heavy hues, nude nails are back for fall 2012. Backstage at DKNY, Essie's Brooch the Subject, a creamy beige adorned models' talons while a black fishnet-tipped nail painted with CND Putty graced the ladies' hands on the runway at Joy Cioci. Alexander Wang and Sally Hansen collaborated on three exclusive nail shades inspired by the designer's fall 2012 collection: Pumice, Ion and Bandage. The latter was the only shade worn down the actual runway, which manicurist Jin Soon Choi said was because Wang wanted a clean, natural look. Says Choi, "It's a modern beige that goes with Coach factory outlet online every skin tone." Micro Braids The last big braid to rule the runway was the thick side version seen at Miu Miu and Alexander Wang two years ago.  For fall 2012, the style is non-committal. Tommy Buckett for Marie Robinson Salon created an accent braid that cascaded diagonally, across the back of the head, seguing into coach factory a fishtail and finally, secured sans elastics or pins. Says Buckett, "We just used drugstore hairspray—TREsemme and Pantene—for coach factory dry texture, to get the ends a little dreadlock-like for an organic feel." Odile Gilbert plaited one small "little girl braid" on one side of the models' hair at coach factory Rachel Zoe and at Y-3, a single braid across the top of the head bridged together two symmetrical Princess Leia-esque buns. Cara&Co: Synergy of Art & Fashion ELLE
Cara&Co: Synergy factory Coach Outlet of Art & FashionMarch 23 9:01 AMby Alice Pfeiffer 0 Comments Photo: Cara&Co The crossover of art and fashion is increasingly obvious today, and a growing number of coach factory online inter-disciplinary shows are popping up worldwide. After Dysfashional, a nomadic exhibition that requires fashion designers to create contemporary art pieces, `Cara&Co: Synergy of Art&Fashion' attempts to give clothes the status of art. The founders of Russian department store Cara&Co, Rosa Alpert and Alexey Oleshov, gave 11 designers, including Anne Valerie Hash, Jean-Paul Knott and Charlie Le Mindu, total freedom to create a garment that was to be shown in the context of an exhibition. This traveling show debuted in Paris during fashion week; its next stop is Moscow in May 2011 and Sydney the following July and August.  All profits from the exhibition go to Sound World, a non-profit organization that works on providing treatment and hearing aid to children worldwide. We talked to Anne Valerie Hash about her contribution to the show and bridging fashion design and contemporary art, and why she thinks the karen millen two worlds are so close. ELLE: What are you showing during the Cara&Co exhibition? AVH: I showed a bolero jacket with a Peter Pan collar, in very particular technical fabrics, a sheet of aluminum foil inserted between two layers of cotton. At the studio, we call this the `memory fabric' because you can give it the shape you want due to the resistance of the aluminum. The second piece was a suede lace dress with geometrical cutouts achieved with a laser into the leather. ELLE: Why was this Coach Outlet coherent vis-à-vis your designs? AVH: We work as much as possible with new, `technical' fabrics, which allow us to be even more creative. We work with the Swiss house Jakob Schlaepfer, which offers high tech fabrics that are often made in Japan and finished in Switzerland—this is close to architecture or sculpture.  It's fascinating. ELLE: Is it easy to link the world of art and fashion? AVH: Fashion isn't art because it only becomes alive once it is worn, but fashion is, of course, inspired by artistic creation, dreams, by current trends. It is in itself a form of creativity that is factory Coach Outlet somewhere in between architecture and sculpture. ELLE: Why are these two worlds so close? AVH: Fashion is the only industry where every six months, you have to start from square one to show something new. People like a variety of propositions and the human mind and feelings evolve constantly. That's what makes fashion and its creative process so fascinating. Fashion is at the crossroad of all influences, whether concrete Coach Outlet Online or abstract. The public likes to dream and art in fashion have this in common: they make the audience's mind travel. Chris Kane, Cathy Horyn To Judge Hyères ELLE
Chris Kane, Cathy Horyn To Judge HyèresApril 21 11:17 AMby Alice Pfeiffer 0 Comments Photo: Hyères Festival PARIS—France might be the country of haute couture and little black dresses, but there's also an edgier alternative, far from Paris. The `Festival de Hyères' was founded twenty-six years ago to promote young designers.  It's held in the decadent Villa Noailles in Hyères in the south of France, once home to Bernard and Marie-Claude de Noailles, a wealthy, aristocratic couple who financed the works of their artist friends like Man Ray, Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau. Every year, a jury elects a winner out of ten competitors pre-selected from the hundreds of applications sent—the chosen one receives €15,000 euros as well as the production behind a Paris show. Past winners include Viktor and Rolf, Lacoste's creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista and Gaspard Yurkievich, but perhaps the most mind-boggling aspect of the event is its jury. In the past, Karl Lagerfeld, Riccardo Tisci, Christian Lacroix and Ann Demeulemesteer have all offered their judging services and this year the town will welcome Raf Simmons, alongside Cathy Horyn, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza cheap herve leger Schouler, Tim Blanks and Corso Como founder director Carla Sozzani. In other words, front row faces that'd be near impossible, as a young designer, to land. It' is reassuring to know that established fashion figures are willing to cross an ocean to look at up-and-coming designers. Photo: Hyères Festival In parallel, Hyères holds a photography contest, which also elects one winner. In celebration of this year's edition, it's showing herve leger sale an exclusive exhibition by legendary fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld (the first to introduce photography to fashion magazine herve leger outlet covers which were, until then, heavily reliant on illustrations). "Fashion can embrace a multitude of fields, and Hyères fights for it to be recognized herve leger outlet as a genuinely artistic practice," said one of Hyères' http://herve-outlet.com/ directors Michel Mallard. "Categories herve leger sale between art and fashion are blurry and it is important to show the world what fashion can bring to art history."
