Таким я увидел Брэда Лакхарта – чистокровного американца – волонтёра Корпуса Мира, родители которого живут ни где-нибудь, а в самом Сан- Франциско.
За свои двадцать четыре года, он объездил полмира – работал в Великобритании, Франции, Италии… Одним словом - настоящий путешественник.
«Путешествуя, я глубже познаю себя», – так объяснил он мне своё нежелание сидеть на месте.
Последняя остановка Брэда достаточно неожиданна – небольшой посёлок Лутугино под Луганском, где он работает учителем английского языка в местной гимназии.
На наши беды американец предпочитает не жаловаться. Много читает, а потом на русском с небольшим акцентом с упоением рассказывает о прочитанном. Вот достает « Записки охотника» Ивана Тургенева. Об этом произведении он узнал из романа Хемингуэя. Впоследствии значительную часть своей куцей украинской учительской зарплаты начал тратить на книги, большую часть которых на месте скорее всего «не осилит» – в силу своей занятости и количества купленного. А скупил Брэд в Лутугино, оказывается, уже немало - почти всю «классику», в том числе, Толстого, Достоевского, Куприна.
«То, что не успею, буду читать в США…», - улыбается он.
Я смотрю на него, и во мне зреет чувство протеста к Михаилу Задорнову, чьи афоризмы мой знакомый волонтер как бы походя опровергает. «Тупые американцы» - совсем не про него. Наоборот, Брэду присуще некое загадочное желание «заглянуть в себя через окружающий мир» не хуже, чем у китайского Дзэн Буддиста. Без назидательных интонаций американский волонтер «болеет» страстью к окружающему, к местной и даже местечковой культуре - дескать, таким вот образом «лучше всего познаешь себя».
В маленьком посёлке Лутугино, где Брэд живёт вот уже два года, он - местная знаменитость.
«Вы уж его не обижайте», – просит бабушка-соседка по подъезду.
А Брэд отмечает, что в славянской культуре всегда было принято защищать непохожих на всех. Его «непохожесть» отмечают и лутугинские мужики, когда зачастую предлагают ему выпить, так сказать, за «дружбу народов». Обычно Брэд последовательно отказывается, дескать, он и дома практически не употребляет спиртных напитков, не обижайтесь, мол. Любят Брэда и в школе, а ученики называют «Мистером Бредом», заменив «Э», на более привычное «Е». Но тот не обижается, прекрасно осознавая, как непохож на местных жителей.
О том, что думает американец, волею судьбы занесённый в дебри Луганской области, что нравиться и что не нравиться ему в Украине он рассказывает охотно и очень искренне.
«Я родился на юге США, - говорит он. - Моя семья - это отец, мать и младшая сестра, которая сегодня учится в Калифорнии. Вообще-то моя семья переезжала очень много раз. Это связано с тем, что мой отец - бизнесмен, и ему часто приходилось кочевать с места на место. Поэтому я жил в каждом регионе США. Сейчас мои родители живут в Калифорнии, в Сан - Франциско. В детстве было достаточно трудно из - за этого кочевого образа жизни. Прежде всего, было трудно ориентироваться и находить новых друзей. С другой стороны, сегодня я могу делать это очень быстро».
Как оказалось, в университете штата Коннектикут на факультете «Международные отношения» Брэд изучал русский язык. И даже один семестр обучался в Санкт- Петербурге
«После того, как я получил образование, уехал в Лондон, где работал учителем физкультуры. Меня устраивала жизнь в Англии, поскольку появилась хорошая возможность путешествовать, - продолжает он свой рассказ. - Но потом я решился поступить в Корпус Мира. Это очень престижная организация, основанная президентом Кеннеди. Эту организацию знают много людей и очень уважают. Уважают, прежде всего потому, что она оказывает благотворительную помощь, не имеет никаких политических задач и старается развивать качество системы образования, способствует развитию взаимопонимания между народами. Например, чтобы жители Лутугино и Луганска узнали об американских ценностях не только из телевизора, но и в живом общении».
- Ты знал что- нибудь о Луганской области до своего приезда ?
- Очень мало. На факультете международных отношений я изучал только русскую культуру и русскую империю. Поэтому до приезда знал историю Украины, связанную с Россией. Сейчас стараюсь ликвидировать пробелы…
- Удивило ли что –нибудь в Лутугино, в Луганске?
- Я бы не сказал, что существуют слишком уж кардинальные отличия в культурном и социальном уровне между Лутугино и подобным городком в Соединённых Штатах. Куда более заметны такие различия, например, между Лутугино и Киевом. В Штатах тоже достаточно бедных городков, где есть шахты и заводы. Если такое предприятие закрывается, то там тоже резко падает уровень жизни. Может какие - то отдельные, незначительные явления меня и поразили, но шока как такового не было. Это связано с тем, что когда человек путешествует, он должен стараться быть готовым ко всяким неожиданностям, к любой ситуации. Если у тебя есть какие - то ожидания, то лучше их сразу подавить и не идти у них на поводу. Лучше всего просто адаптироваться к тому, что есть. Я живу неплохо, снимаю квартиру в центре Лутугино, у меня есть хороший коллектив в гимназии, творческая и живая работа. Я имею такие же проблемы, как и местные школьные учителя. Мне бывает скучно только от того, что я очень далеко от дома. Но это чувство я бы испытывал, если бы находился в любой стране.
- Есть что -то такое, что ты никогда не поймёшь?
-У нас в Штатах невозможно выпить на улице. Только в баре, ресторане, дома. Когда я увидел, как люди в Украине пьют на улице, меня это поначалу шокировало, потом озадачило. Например, была ситуация, когда очень хотелось найти утром кофе. Однако оказалось легче найти пиво. В результате я все-таки оббегал полгорода и нашёл такое место... Вот ты меня спрашивал про мусор…. У нас в штатах, 40 лет назад тоже была такая проблема. Пока жена президента Линдона Джонсона не инициировала программу, которая называлась «Красивая Америка». Государство очень много пропагандировало такие идеи, как «учиться бросать мусор в урны», «поддерживать чистоту в родном городе». Предполагался целый процесс, целью которого было изменение менталитета людей. И, в конце концов, это сработало. Когда я был мальчиком, меня часто ругали за то, что я бросал пакет от шоколадного батончика мимо урны.

Но и в Штатах существует мнение, что учитель должен получать больше. У меня на родине учителя получают, конечно, больше, но и цены значительно выше. Если здесь учительница имеет свою семью, дом, огород, то она живёт достаточно неплохо. Конечно, было бы хорошо, если бы они получали большую поддержку от администрации, от государства.. По- моему, украинцы нашли собственную стратегию выживания. Например, у нас в Бостоне, где я вырос, если у тебя нет достаточно денег, чтобы хватило на жизнь, то нет иного выхода, чем бедствовать. Американцы не приучены выращивать свои овощи и фрукты, у них нет своих огородов и дач. Здесь же люди понимая, что они получают достаточно небольшую зарплату, живут сообща, наприме,р вместе с бабушкой, которая оказывает семье помощь. Я почерпнул очень много полезного из этого. Например, для меня стало более важным, чем раньше, жить рядом с моими родителями. Раньше я всегда хотел стать независимым, жить далеко от дома. Теперь же я думаю, что бабушка и дедушка должны занимать более значительную роль в моей жизни, а также в жизни моих будущих детей.
- Американцы по сравнению с украинцами больше коллективисты или индивидуалисты?
- Это достаточно сложный вопрос, на него мне трудно дать ответ. Я думаю, что украинцы, конечно, более коллективные, особенно внутри своей семьи. Американцы более мобильны. Поэтому члены американских семей очень часто живут очень далеко друг от друга. И они не могут поддерживать друг друга во времена кризиса. А здесь, чаще всего, люди живут в одном городе со своими родственниками и помогают друг другу. И не только материально, но и эмоционально.
- Ты получаешь обычную «украинскую» учительскую зарплату. Хватает ли вам этих денег на жизнь?
- Я получаю около 1500 гривен. Снимаю жильё за 400 гривен, оплачиваю коммунальные услуги и уже научился «добывать» еду "украинскими методами" - предпочитаю покупать продукты на базаре. Это даже лучше, так как там более натуральные продукты. А с другой стороны, там всё стоит дешевле, чем в супермаркетах. Конечно, если бы я жил, например в Луганске, а не в Лутугино, то прожить было бы труднее. А в целом, я думаю, для парня, который живёт сам, моей зарплаты должно хватать
- Родители тебе помогают?
- Нет, я живу сам. Дело в том, что когда иностранец приезжает в новую страну, необходимо адаптироваться, контактировать с местными людьми, надо узнать всё, даже какие блюда здесь люди готовят и едят…
- Отдаешь ли какие -либо предпочтения в украинской кухне?
- Сейчас я очень люблю готовить зелёный борщ. Во всяком случае, пока на базаре есть щавель. В тоже время я американец и привык к разным видам кухни. Мне нравится, например, мексиканская кухня. Оказалось, что и в Украине, если хорошо поискать, всегда можно найти разные специи, готовить то, что хочется. К тому же активно обмениваюсь рецептами с местными жителями. И в этом мне повезло, поскольку в этом вижу выход из ситуации. А в США большинство предпочитают питаться в кафе и ресторанах. Это связано с разнообразием подобных заведений, а также с тем, что люди, всё- таки живут в большем достатке.
- Даёт ли наша образовательная система вам возможность творчески реализовать себя?
- Сложный вопрос… Я бы хотел отметить, что, отвечая на него, я высказываю только свою точку зрения, а не официальную точку зрения Корпуса Мира. Любая система образования мешает творчеству педагога, даже у нас. У меня, например, знакомый историк ушёл из профессии. Он старался принести какие-то интересные материалы. Когда директор узнал, он попросил его зайти в офис. Историку было сказано, что конечно, интересно и полезно было бы использовать такие материалы, но на это «нет времени». Через год- два ему надоело это, и он ушёл из школы. Поэтому я думаю, что мои сомнения относительно системы образования такие же, как и у моих коллег. Прежде всего, волнует то, что у учителей очень маленький авторитет перед учениками. По- моему, главной проблемой является то, что после развала Советского Союза началось формирование новой образовательной системы. Этот процесс продолжается, но он требует времени. К сожалению, и в течение этого процесса приходится надо воспитывать детей. А чем отличаются украинские и американские дети, мне трудно сказать. У вас свои проблемы, у нас свои. Дети сегодня прекрасно понимают, что поступление в университет не совсем зависит от знаний. Они и их родители понимают, что их будущее не совсем зависит от поведения на уроках, от прилежности выполнения домашнего задания. Но я думаю, те, кто отвечает за существование системы, стараются найти выход из сложившейся ситуации, найти решение. Им тоже сложно, поскольку мало денег. Было бы очень хорошо, если бы Украина могла платить учителям пять тысяч в месяц. Но это просто невозможно. Но с другой стороны, если система не может достойно поддерживать учителей, то будут проблемы. Могу сказать. что в моём девятом классе есть дети, которые понимают английский язык и владеют им практически свободно. А рядом – ученики, которые вообще не могут сказать ни слова. В общем, проблема очень сложная... -Расскажи о летних лагерях, которые вы организовываете для школьников? - Мы организовали летний лагерь, который в июне расположился в Лутугинском Дворце спорта. К нам приезжали несколько американских волонтёров из Корпуса Мира, как и я. Они сейчас работают в Винницкой области. Также, в этом году я пригласил старшеклассников, которые уже были в нашем лагере в прошлом году. Главное, чему мы хотели обучить детей, это умение быть лидером. Хочу подчеркнуть, что, общаясь с детьми, никогда нельзя на них давить. Например, человек ошибся, не надо кричать на ребёнка, надо сказать – давай ещё раз, и в следующий раз будет лучше. Я видел у нас в селе несколько тренеров, один из них судил футбольный матч . И вот вратарь что- то делал не так, не смог поймать мяч, а тренер на него заорал. А потом даже не объяснил, как правильно это делать. Для меня это было очень болезненно. Я хочу, чтобы дети у нас в лагере поддерживали друг друга, особенно, если они находятся в одной команде, и сообща преодолевали проблемы… - Получается? - По - моему, да. Я хочу быть примером для ребят. По крайней мере, они смотрят на нас, и потом, когда волонтёр уедет, всё это будет продолжаться. Это одна из наших целей.
- В Лутугино, ты, наверное, местная знаменитость?
- Да. Городок небольшой и все знают друг друга. Отношение ко мне вежливое и хорошее. Может быть, я и ожидал каких-то неприятностей и проблем от местных людей. Любой человек иногда может попасть в неприятную ситуацию. Но я не могу вспомнить ни одного раза, когда бы я с кем-то конфликтовал. Ни в школе, ни на улице – нигде. Коллектив гимназии ко мне обращается очень уважительно, очень гостеприимен. Они понимают, как сложно жить за границей и далеко от дома. Поэтому поддерживают меня, и я очень благодарен им за это. Наша организация всегда старается обращать наше внимание на безопасность. Как человек должен вести себя, чтобы оградить от проблем. Например, не ходить одному в клубы. Я помню, первое время зимой я ходил по улице и видел группу молодых людей. Я старался обойти их стороной. Я помню, немного при этом переживал. А сейчас я знаю, что в каждой группе молодых людей по крайней мере, один - мне знаком. А вообще-то, я бы не рекомендовал Корпус Мира человека, который бы не хотел знать, как хорошие вещи о другой культуре, так и плохие. Это позволяет смотреть на неё более объективно. У меня естьподруга, она работает в организации Глобальный Союз Женщин. Она год прожила в России и чётко разделяет тех, кто живёт долгое время в чужой стране, и тех, кто только путешествует. У представителей обеих групп абсолютно разное видение той страны, в которой они побывали. Туристы, например, не могут знать, как это трудно работать в небольшом городке. Мне же жизнь в Лутугино даёт возможность продолжать самосовершенствоваться. У меня уже есть неплохое знание о жизни здесь. - Интересуются ли тобой луганчанки или «лутуганчанки»? - Обычно это третий, наиболее распространённый вопрос, который мне задают. После «ты откуда» и «как ты сюда попал». Отмечу, что славянки очень красивые. А поводу отношений могу сказать, что это сложно создать семью. Это связано с тем, что нужно найти общие интересы.Очень много молодёжи в маленьких городках женится сразу после школы. Но ведь там очень трудно найти работу или поступить в университет, поэтому взрослую жизнь они начинают с создания семьи. Мне заводить отношения здесь очень сложно, поскольку у жительниц Лутугино совершенно иной образ жизни. Процесс знакомства с людьми для дальнейших дружеских отношений требует времени и терпения. В моём школьном коллективе большинство – сорокалетние коллеги, которые уже воспитывают детей. Для знакомства с людьми нужно было больше ездить в Луганск, где я организовал кружок английского языка. Именно здесь я и нашёл новых друзей. Что касается девушек, то есть конечно, такие, которые уже готовы начинать семейную жизнь, но я к этому не готов. У меня есть знакомая, она работает в школе и одновременно учиться на факультете психологии. Она тоже учила английский язык. Ей надо было выучить очень сложный текст. Она попросила меня о помощи. Я её пригласил к себе. Она пришла, испытав пристальное внимание бабушек и дедушек у подъезда. Они мне потом говорили: «О, мы видим у тебя новая девушка? Ты собираешься жениться?» На эти вопросы я обычно стараюсь не обращать внимания. Ведь как только увидят меня с девушкой, сразу спрашивают про женитьбу. Какие могут быть отношения с девушками, если я в конце концов поеду домой, а они останутся?
