Экологи напоминают, что на северо-востоке Луганской области, а именно в районе Стрелецкой степи, находится самая большая в Украине популяция байбаков.

«Сегодня идет речь о том, чтобы в областном центре поставить памятник байбаку как символу области. Экологи эту идею поддерживают, но предупреждают: байбак находится под угрозой истребления, поэтому нужны серьезные программы, которые помогут сохранить его для будущих поколений», - отмечено в сообщении пресс-службы.

Несмотря на то, что в этом году лицензии на официальную охоту на байбака выданы не были, «зверька продолжают отстреливать».

Специалисты управления утверждают, что браконьерством в основном занимаются «приезжие, а не местные жители».

По словам начальника Государственного управления охраны окружающей природной среды в Луганской области А. А. Арапова, если в ближайшее время не будут разработаны и приняты меры по охране животного, то в дальнейшем исчезновения этого вида животных вполне возможно.

Еще одна серьезная причина сокращения количества байбаков - нехватка территорий для заповедника. Экологи отмечают, что для того, чтобы уравновесить естественную ситуацию, нужна не одна тысяча гектаров земли.

Экологи считают, что заповедные площади должны быть увеличены почти вдвое, но руководители районов жалуются, что у них совсем не осталось свободной земли и неохотно отдают свои территории.
